UNIVERSITY OF MODENA – ADVANCED DEGREE IN VEHICLE ENGINEERING

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE CAR
20060216-gr05-fian1

It is entirely appropriate that the Advanced Degree in Vehicle Engineering should have been established here in Modena – Italy’s own “Motor City” – in collaboration with, amongst others, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Pagani, Ducati and VM Motori. In all these years, both the Advanced Degree and its antecedent, the MASTER IN VEHICLE ENGINEERING, have been promoted with unflagging commitment by Professor GIUSEPPE CANTORE, Course Director and one of only a handful of true specialists in motor engineering, not just in Italy but anywhere in the world.

Cantore’s dedication is evident in the plethora of specialised courses he has set up in recent years, including a course on “BODYWORK DESIGN” led by a designer and journalist (and specialist in high-performance cars) called Fabrizio Ferrari, who – in less than two years – has seen the number of students attending the course rise threefold.

The course is essentially practical in nature, and involves Ferrari teaching students about the fundamental elements of technical design as it relates to every aspect of a car’s bodywork, including orthogonal projections and flat-plan views. For the students, the course is very much “hands-on”, thanks to the creation of a 1:5 scale technical drawing, with particular attention paid to the main regulatory guidelines in relation to testing and certification.

The workload is certainly not insubstantial, but, according to the students, the course is extremely interesting and it gives them a “very real” vision of the subject about which they are so enamoured – cars.
