Mexico Grand Prix – Charles: “They’re very passionate here”
Mexico City, 24 October 2019 – Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, and indeed the other Formula 1 drivers, had an early start today, as the Thursday media activity is timed to better suit the time constraints of European press deadlines. Shortly after nine, the drivers and their engineers tackled the usual track walk around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, before getting on with press work. In the afternoon, engineering meetings and technical briefings were on the agenda, in preparation for the start of track action tomorrow.
In the press conference. Sebastian Vettel was one of the drivers called to attend the first official press conference of the Grand Prix weekend and said he was ready for what is bound to be a tough race. “We’re favourites? I don’t know, but we have definitely been doing well recently in terms of our car performance in tight sections of track. We are strong down the straights, but on a track like this, that in itself might not be enough. We will need to get an understanding of how the car behaves in the twisty parts.” Many factors will affect the outcome of Sunday’s race. “The weather could affect the level of grip on track therefore it’s hard to know now what sort of problems we might face. It will be important to gather a lot of date in tomorrow’s free practice,” concluded Vettel.
Charles. Away from the press conference, Charles Leclerc also faced the media. “I really like racing in Mexico, because you can feel that the people are very passionate and to drive with all these enthusiastic fans so close to the track is enjoyable, even if I’m not a local. In recent races, we have shown that we are capable of winning and so again here in Mexico, victory is our goal.” The Monegasque driver was asked to sum up his season so far. “Even though it’s just my first year at Ferrari, I can say that I have achieved many of the objectives I had set myself. In the remaining races, I’d like to win a few more times and finish third in the Drivers’ championship.” The final question Charles had to deal with was how would he celebrate if he wins on Sunday. “I’ll feat on tacos!” was his response.
Programme. Tomorrow’s first free practice session starts at 10 local time (17 CET) with the second one at 14 (21 CET). On Saturday, the third session gets underway at 10 (17 CET) before qualifying at 13 (20 CET). The race starts at 13.10 on Sunday (20.10 CET).
