Japanese Grand Prix – Practice 2: Charles fourth, Seb fifth

Suzuka, 11 October 2019 –In the second free practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc was fourth fastest with Sebastian Vettel fifth, posting times of 1’28”392 and1’28”424 respectively. In case, it’s not possible to hold qualifying on Sunday morning at 10 (7 CET) the FP2 classification will constitute the basis of the start grid for the race which gets underway at 14.10 (7.10 CET)

Packed programme. It was a particularly busy session with two runs aimed at producing a “qualifying” time, one at the start of the session and another towards the end when the track was more rubbered in. In between those runs, the team worked towards the race with long runs to analyse the Medium and Soft compounds.

65 laps. Charles started off with a 1’29”686 on the Medium tyres and got down to a 1’28”392 on the Softs. At the end, on new Softs he stopped the clocks in 1’28’141. Sebastian started with a 1’30”203 then did a 1’28”424 on the Softs before getting down to 1’28”376 towards the end, when he was slowed by the high volume of traffic on track.

Back on Sunday. Saturday track activity has been cancelled due to the arrival in the Mie Prefecture of typhoon Hagibis, due to hit the area overnight. Qualifying wil now take place on Sunday at 10 (3 CET) with no third practice session preceding it. The race as planned at 14.10 local, (7.10 CET.)
