Grim weather exalts Nurmi and Weiland in Race 2 at the Nürburgring

Nürburgring, 29 August 2021 - Luka Nurmi claimed a splendid win at the end of the second Trofeo Pirelli race held in adverse weather conditions, putting an end to Niccolò Schirò’s long unbeaten streak, while Sergio Paulet came out on top in the Am category. In the Coppa Shell, authoritative class win for James Weiland with Ingvar Mattsson clinching both Am and Overall victories.

Trofeo Pirelli. The bad weather that ravaged the Nürburgring track succeeded in raising the game for Luka Nurmi’s (Formula Racing). After his Race 2 triumph at Monza, he was once again back on the top step of the podium. The Finn, despite his tender age, was astute enough to capitalize on the battle between Niccolò Schirò (Rossocorsa) and the leader of the championship standings, Michelle Gatting (Scuderia Niki – Iron Lynx), springing a surprise on the pair before romping home to victory. The Danish driver, after shaking off the Italian, then tried to undermine Nurmi’s lead, but when Jackson went off-track the field was forced to sit out the remaining minutes of the race behind the Safety Car. On the podium alongside Nurmi and Gatting was Luca Ludwig (Octane 126), who produced a splendid overtaking manoeuvre against Schirò to seal the third spot.

In the Am class, Sergio Paulet (Santogal Madrid – MST Team) took a well-deserved triumph, thanks to another rough race for Christian Brunsborg, shortening the gap in the class standings considerably.

Coppa Shell. James Weiland (Rossocorsa) took his second win of the weekend, albeit behind a formidable Ingvar Mattsson (Scuderia Autoropa), winner among the Am drivers and first past the chequered flag. Weiland deftly fended off the attacks from Ernst Kirchmayr (Baron Motorsport), who was able to complete the thirty-minute race ahead of newcomer Christian Herdt-Wipper (Saggio München). The race, which ended behind the Safety Car after Joakim Olander (Scuderia Autoropa) had gone off-track, also saw on the Am podium – in addition to the aforementioned Mattsson – Willem Van Der Vorm (Scuderia Monte-Carlo), who breaks away further at the top of the standings and Alexander Nussbaumer (Gohm Motorsport), first in Race 1.

Standings and schedule. In the run-up to the Spa-Francorchamps event scheduled for 10-12 September, the championship standings see Michelle Gatting leading the Trofeo Pirelli and Christian Brunsborg ahead in the Trofeo Pirelli Am. James Weiland is the leader of the Coppa Shell while Willem Van der Worm tops the Coppa Shell Am.
