Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Europe – Double for Gatting and Swedish triumphs at Spielberg

Spielberg, 2 May 2021 – The second round of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli held this weekend at Spielberg in Austria saw plenty of spectacular races and twists and turns. Michelle Gatting (Scuderia Niki – Iron Lynx) excelled in the Trofeo Pirelli, the star of the weekend, along with Joakim Olander (Scuderia Autoropa), who bagged a one-two in the Coppa Shell Am.

Trofeo Pirelli. On a perfect weekend, Michelle Gatting won all the points available with two victories, two pole positions and two fastest laps that put her firmly on top of the standings with 64 points against 44 for John Wartique (FML – D2P) and Luka Nurmi (Formula Racing) on 42. The Belgian and the Finn tried to challenge the Danish driver but had to give up and settle for a supporting role on the podium in both races.

Trofeo Pirelli Am. Sergio Paulet (Santogal Madrid – MST Team) and Christian Brunsborg (Formula Racing) continued where they left off at Monza. Showing their title credentials, they alternated first and second place in the two races at Spielberg, pulling away from their pursuers. Hugo Delacour (Scuderia Monte-Carlo) and Marco Pulcini (Rossocorsa – Pellin Racing), on 28 points after two third places, are the closest rivals of the two rookies on 54 and 47 points, respectively.

Coppa Shell. In the second of this weekend’s hard-fought races, Christian Kinch (Formula Racing) clinched a historic win on Sunday after eleven seasons and 96 appearances in the Prancing Horse one-make series. Axel Sartingen (Lueg Sportivo) triumphed in Race-1, while Ernst Kirchmayr (Baron Motorsport) was twice runner-up and James Weiland (Rossocorsa) twice fought back to third place. He tops the standings on 50 points, followed by Kinch, 11 lengths behind.

Coppa Shell Am. Swedish driver Joakim Olander, with two victories, a pole and a fastest lap, holds top spot by a point from Giuseppe Ramelli (Rossocorsa – Pellin Racing), who leaves Spielberg with a second place in Race-1 and a retirement in Race-2. On Saturday, after thirty very hard-fought minutes, Laurent De Meeus (HR Owen – FF Corse) also returned to the podium, while on Sunday, Miroslav Výboh (Scuderia Praha) and a steady Tommy Lindroth (Baron Motorsport) mounted the podium alongside the Scuderia Autoropa driver.

Challenge North America. Drivers in the North American series were also in action on the Sonoma track in California. In Race-1 on Saturday, Cooper MacNeil (Ferrari of Westlake) triumphed in the Trofeo Pirelli and Michael Watt (Ferrari of Atlanta) in the Coppa Shell.

Programme. The continental series will be back in action on 29 and 30 May, at Brno, in the Czech Republic.
