Ferrari Challenge Europe – Outstanding victories for Schirò and Weiland at Nürburgring
Nürburgring, 28 August 2021 – Niccolò Schirò and James Weiland won an exciting first race in the Ferrari Challenge Europe Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell, held at the Nürburgring as part of the Ferrari Racing Days. The Italian driver recorded his fifth consecutive victory since returning to the series, while Weiland claimed his second season win after Race-1 at Monza.
Trofeo Pirelli. Niccolò Schirò (Rossocorsa) triumphed on the back of yet another brilliant start which saw him pass championship leader Michelle Gatting (Scuderia Niki – Iron Lynx), third under the chequered flag. The Danish driver crossed the line behind Thomas Neubauer (Charles Pozzi – Courage), who spent the entire race in the winner’s slipstream. Luca Ludwig (Octane 126), making his debut in the 488 Challenge Evo, finished an excellent fourth. In the Am class, championship leader Christian Brunsborg (Formula Racing) had to retire early. This left the way clear for Roger Grouwels (Kroymans – Race Art), Ange Barde (SF Côte d’Azur Cannes – IB FAST) and Sergio Paulet (Santogal Madrid – MST Team), third at the finish line. Rookie François Lansard (Formula Racing) secured an excellent fourth place, while a contact knocked a resilient Alessandro Cozzi (Formula Racing) out of the running.
Coppa Shell. After an intense thirty-minute set-to in the Coppa Shell, American James Weiland (Rossocorsa) clinched the win. This propelled him back to the top of the standings, thanks to the fourth place of rival Ernst Kirchmayr (Baron Motorsport), with whom he also fought an intense duel today. Rookie Christian Herdt-Wipper (Saggio München) climbed the podium behind the Rossocorsa driver, along with a tenacious Christian Kinch who fended off Kirchmayr’s assaults on third place. In the Am, the Austrian Alexander Nussbaumer (Gohm Motorsport) emerged victorious ahead of Ingvar Mattsson (Scuderia Autoropa) and Joakim Olander (Scuderia Autoropa). After setting off from pole and losing a lot of ground in the early stages, the latter pulled off a remarkable comeback.
