Ferrari Challenge Europe – One-two for Schirò and thrilling show for Valencia fans

The Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli season passed the midway point over the weekend at Valencia’s “Ricardo Tormo” circuit. It did so with two days of thrills, accompanied by the enthusiasm of 4,000 fans finally back cheering and supporting the Ferrari Challenge 488 Evos. It was a perfect weekend in the Trofeo Pirelli for Niccolò Schirò (Rossocorsa) and for Christian Brunsborg (Formula Racing) in the AM. The drivers made a clean sweep with two poles and two victories apiece. However, in the Coppa Shell, Ernst Kirchmayr (Baron Motorsport) and Christian Kinch (Formula Racing) shared the spoils in the two races, as did Willem Van Der Vorm (Scuderia Monte-Carlo) and Joakim Olander (Scuderia Autoropa) in the AM.

Trofeo Pirelli. Niccolò Schirò closed the gap in the standings, continuing his winning streak with two victories in Spain. The Rossocorsa driver thus remains in hot pursuit of the top positions in the overall standings. However, her third and second places at Valencia, leave Danish driver Michelle Gatting (Scuderia Niki – Iron Lynx) firmly in command. Thomas Neubauer (Charles Pozzi – Courage) returned to the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli with a double podium, getting the better of Luka Nurmi (Formula Racing) and John Wartique (FML – D2P), respectively second and third in the championship.

Trofeo Pirelli AM. The Spaniard Sergio Paulet (Santogal Madrid – MST Team) and the Dane Christian Brunsborg set pulses racing in the AM category with two gripping races. The Formula Racing team bested his rival both in wet conditions on Saturday and in the sprint on Sunday. After this weekend, Brunsborg holds a 29-point championship lead over the Madrileño driver. Frenchman Ange Barde (SF Côte d’Azur Cannes) lies in third on 43 points, following an unlucky second outing after conquering the third step of the podium in Race 1.

Coppa Shell. As usual, the two Coppa Shell races were full of twists and turns. On the back of his win in the wet in Race 1 and his second place in Race 2, Ernst Kirchmayr tops the championship, two points ahead of American James Weiland (Rossocorsa), who had to settle for a fourth and a third place in Valencia. Both races saw tight battles, with veteran Christian Kinch claiming another victory in his so-far successful season. In Race 2, the Swede edged out the two overall leaders by 753 thousandths and 1.768 seconds, respectively, to take third place in the class standings.

Coppa Shell AM. The category fully lived up to expectations. In Race 1, Willem Van Der Vorm put on a great show on the wet asphalt, starting from pole and claiming his third win in a row after the two at Brno. Ingvar Mattsson (Scuderia Autoropa) enjoyed a brilliant weekend, climbing the second step of the podium on his return to the Prancing Horse series, ahead of Italian Maurizio Pitorri (CDP – Best Lap). On Sunday, Joakim Olander was too fast for the Monegasque, with the excellent Paolo Scudieri (SA.MO.CAR.) completing the podium after a comeback from a twelfth place start. Willem Van Der Vorm left Valencia weekend on the top of the standings, 19 lengths ahead of his rival Olander. Giuseppe Ramelli (Rossocorsa – Pellin Racing) held onto third position while Scudieri climbed up to fourth overall.

Next round. The fifth round of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli will take place at the Nürburgring circuit from 27 to 29 August.
