The history of Alfa Romeo 1900C Super Sprint

A new era began for Alfa Romeo in 1950 with the 1900 model. Founded in 1910, the brand transformed itself during this period from a manufacturer of exclusive luxury limousines and sports cars to a mass producer. Thanks to the introduction of industrial production methods, the Alfa Romeo plant in Milan’s Portello district built over 17,500 1900 series saloons between 1950 and 1959 – a number previously unattainable for the brand.

The 1900 model was the first Alfa Romeo with a self-supporting body. This design actually meant the end of the successful business model of numerous design studios. Until then, these could buy rolling chassis (chassis with wheel suspensions, engine, gearbox and drivetrain) from Alfa Romeo and complete them with a body they designed and manufactured themselves.
But Alfa Romeo responded to corresponding requests and also offered the chassis of the 1900 model without bodywork. For sporty convertibles and coupés, the wheelbase was shortened by 13 to 250 centimetres. This is indicated by the additional C (for the Italian corto) in 1900C.
The designation Super, for its part, stood for the most powerful engine variant in each case. The last version, the 1.9-litre four-cylinder with racing genes, produced 85 kW (115 hp). It had two overhead camshafts, which was not a matter of course at the time, nor was the five-speed gearbox.

More than a dozen carrozzieri designed their own coupés and cabriolets based on the Alfa Romeo 1900, including Touring, Pininfarina, Zagato, Bertone, Vignale and Ghia.
